Discover The Urantia Book \Papers\Intermediate \Relation of Adjusters to Universe Creatures
Adjusters influence universe creatures in diverse ways, adjusting to each mind’s uniqueness. They are tireless spirit partners, shaping the soul and preparing it for greater meaning, service, and eternal destiny.
Reading Level:
Thought Adjusters are described as children of the universe career who must gain experience through their indwelling of mortal beings. Their work involves rehearsing for future universe activities while residing within human minds, preparing both themselves and their human partners for higher spiritual responsibilities. These divine fragments evolve through their association with mortals, acquiring skills and abilities that enhance their effectiveness in future assignments.
The paper explores various classifications of Adjusters, their relationship to different types of mortals across the universe, and their influence on human personality development. Despite facing numerous challenges from the material nature of human existence, Adjusters persevere in their mission to spiritualize the mind and preserve all values worth saving. Their growth through experience culminates in various destinies, including the remarkable status of Personalized Adjusters who serve special functions throughout the universe.
Thought Adjusters are portrayed as children of the universe career who must gain experience while indwelling evolving mortals. As human children develop adaptability through childhood play and social activities, Adjusters similarly acquire skills for their future cosmic responsibilities through their partnership with humans. This preparatory experience in mortal minds helps them prepare for increased responsibilities and greater opportunities in their future universe service.
The Adjusters' focus is not primarily on the temporal affairs of human existence but rather on rehearsing the realities of the universe career using the evolving minds of human beings. They are engaged in a form of cosmic preparation, practicing important spiritual functions that will be fully realized in the next stages of existence. This mutually beneficial relationship allows both the human and the Adjuster to develop in ways that serve their shared eternal destiny.
There must exist a comprehensive training program for virgin Adjusters before they leave Divinington, though details of this preparation remain largely unknown. When an Adjuster's human partner fails to survive, the Adjuster returns to Divinington for additional training based on the experience gained during that association. This retraining prepares them for future assignments with other mortal beings, allowing them to apply lessons learned from previous indwellings.
Like all beings within the realm of the Supreme, Thought Adjusters must acquire experience through actual living. Despite their divine perfection, they require practical experience to develop their ministrative abilities. Adjusters progressively develop skills through contact with material races, regardless of whether their specific mortal subjects survive. In a fascinating complementary process, while humans evolve inward and upward from man to God, Adjusters evolve outward and downward from God to man, with their eventual fusion creating a being that encompasses both divine and human qualities.
Self-acting Adjusters represent a specialized functional classification that indicates enhanced autonomy and capability. To qualify as self-acting, an Adjuster must meet specific criteria such as having requisite prior experience, achieving balance of spiritual power in a human who has reached the third psychic circle, serving a subject who has made a supreme decision, being associated with a member of the reserve corps of destiny, or having performed special services beyond normal duties. These qualifications mark significant milestones in an Adjuster's development.
These advanced Adjusters demonstrate greater independence and capability, possessing a marked degree of will in matters not directly involving their human subjects. They can communicate with other Adjusters on the levels of their mutual work, primarily to preserve essential data for their ministry. While they can technically leave the human body at will, they rarely do so temporarily. The most advanced are "superacting Adjusters," who have completed their assigned tasks and simply await the natural death of their mortal partner or the translation of the immortal soul.
The nature of Adjuster work varies according to their assignment and the type of planet they serve. Some Adjusters are merely loaned for a single lifetime, while others are bestowed with permission for eternal fusion if their subjects survive. The paper describes three distinct groups of worlds with different Adjuster-mortal relationships, each serving unique evolutionary purposes in the divine plan.
On "series one" worlds, Adjusters indwell primitive minds primarily for their own training, though few mortals on these worlds choose the path of spiritual advancement. On "series two" worlds, Adjusters are only loaned to mortals and cannot achieve fusion, serving instead as patterns for spiritual development. Urantia (earth) is classified as a "series three" world, where there is a potential betrothal between Adjusters and mortals that can lead to eternal fusion. The effectiveness of Adjuster contact also varies based on brain type, with three-brained mortals allowing for greater Adjuster interaction during mortal life than the one- and two-brained types found on Urantia.
Thought Adjusters significantly enhance intellectual communication between humans by facilitating the exchange of concepts rather than merely emotions. Animals can express feelings but cannot share ideas and ideals as humans do. While Adjusters are not personalities themselves but prepersonal beings, their presence augments the qualitative expressions of human personality, especially if the Adjuster has had previous experience with other mortals.
The type and experience level of an Adjuster substantially influences the potential for human personality expression. Many of Urantia's great intellectual and spiritual leaders benefited from superior and experienced Adjusters. If all Adjusters were withdrawn from earth, human civilization would gradually revert to primitive conditions, as these divine Monitors represent a significant force in advancing civilization. In some cases, an experienced Adjuster who previously indwelt someone who rejected survival may later be assigned to another human, bringing valuable experience that benefits the new partnership.
Supreme and self-acting Adjusters can contribute spiritual insights to human minds during periods of free-flowing creative imagination or during sleep. At such times, the Adjuster can momentarily redirect mental currents to facilitate profound spiritual transformations in the higher levels of consciousness. These moments allow for better alignment between the mind and the spiritual tones of higher levels of reality, both present and future.
The Adjusters' work is frequently hampered by the unstable and rapidly shifting mental attitudes of humans. Preconceived opinions, settled ideas, and long-standing prejudices create significant barriers to their spiritual ministry. The fundamental challenge of human life involves adjusting ancestral tendencies to accommodate the spiritual urges initiated by the Adjuster's presence. While hereditary factors may limit the speed of spiritual progress, they cannot prevent eventual spiritual achievement when the human willingly cooperates with the Adjuster's guidance.
Adjusters never fail in their mission, and no worthwhile value is ever lost in the universe. Even if a mortal rejects survival, the Adjuster preserves all meaningful aspects of that life experience and transfers them to future assignments. These surviving values and meanings benefit other evolving minds with survival capacity, ensuring that no true meaning or real value ever perishes from the universe.
When an Adjuster has indwelt multiple non-surviving mortals and later becomes personalized, all the accumulated experience becomes the permanent possession of that newly Personalized Adjuster. The most notable example is the Personalized Adjuster of Michael of Nebadon, who guided Jesus during his human life. This extraordinary Adjuster had previously served with Machiventa Melchizedek during Abraham's time and engaged in numerous significant missions. The Adjuster's triumph in Jesus' mind reflected his consistent dedication to the Father's will, and now this Adjuster preserves the eternal living transcript of the values Jesus created during his mortal experience.
While we cannot definitively state whether non-Adjuster fragments of the Father can be personalized, Adjusters attain personality through acquiring personal attributes during service to personal beings. These Personalized Adjusters reside on Divinington, where they instruct and direct their prepersonal associates. They represent a unique combination of Creator and creature experience, bridging the existential and the experiential in universe administration.
Personalized Adjusters serve as wise and powerful executives of the Architects of the Master Universe and function as personal agents of the Universal Father across all levels of reality. They rarely appear openly in the universes but occasionally consult with the Ancients of Days or the Creator Sons. When the planetary Vorondadek observer assumed emergency regency of Urantia, three Personalized Adjusters appeared spontaneously but were not assigned specific duties. These extraordinary beings perform a wide range of services for numerous orders of universe personalities, though much of their ministry remains unrevealed to mortal creatures.
