Adjusters shape personality by enhancing moral choice and spiritual desire. They lead humans quietly, cooperating with the will to form a soul fit for survival and fusion with God.
Reading Level:
The relationship between Thought Adjusters and mortal beings represents the most divine form of affection in all creation. These divine fragments from the Universal Father work tirelessly within human minds to guide spiritual growth and development while respecting free will. Their patient and loving ministry remains largely unrecognized by their human hosts, yet they remain utterly devoted to fostering spiritual progress and eventual fusion.
The seven psychic circles represent stages of spiritual growth that humans progress through with Adjuster assistance, culminating in potential fusion either during mortal life or after death. This relationship represents a unique partnership between the divine and mortal realms, with the ultimate goal being the complete unification of the human soul with its divine indweller, creating an eternal being that combines the best qualities of both.
The gift of freedom to imperfect beings inevitably brings suffering, but the perfect ancestral Deity lovingly shares in this suffering. The love and devotion that Thought Adjusters demonstrate toward individual mortals is the most truly divine affection found anywhere in creation. This ministry is described as touchingly sublime and divinely Fatherlike in nature.
The Universal Father has reserved this particular form of personal contact with his individual creatures as an exclusive Creator prerogative. Nothing in the vast universe compares to the remarkable ministry of these impersonal entities that indwell the children of the evolutionary planets. They work tirelessly to guide mortals toward spiritual perfection in ways that demonstrate infinite patience and divine skill.
Thought Adjusters should not be considered as residing within the physical brain tissue of humans, but rather as indwelling the mortal mind itself. They communicate indirectly and often unrecognized by their human subjects, especially during worshipful experiences when mind connects with spirit in superconsciousness. These divine helpers are dedicated to guiding humans safely through their spiritual journey toward the celestial destination of happiness. They function as wise navigators who pilot God-conscious humans away from danger toward spiritual perfection.
The Adjusters are not only concerned with spiritual preparation for the next stage of existence but also take interest in temporal welfare and earthly achievements. They contribute to health, happiness, and prosperity when these align with spiritual progress, remaining actively involved in all aspects of life that influence eternal development. However, they remain passive regarding purely material concerns while being divinely active concerning all matters affecting eternal destiny. Their work becomes hampered by physical poisons, but even more severely by mental poisons such as fear, anger, envy, and suspicion.
When Thought Adjusters indwell human minds, they bring predetermined plans for intellectual and spiritual development, but humans maintain complete freedom to accept or reject these plans. The Adjusters respect human sovereignty and never arbitrarily influence decisions or choices. Their mission involves making spiritual adjustments that humans willingly authorize, thereby gaining greater influence over personality development without ever violating free will. This approach allows the Adjusters to guide without controlling, maintaining the essential freedom that defines human existence.
The Adjusters work to improve, modify, and coordinate human thinking processes rather than controlling thought itself. They focus primarily on building spiritual counterparts of human experiences—morontia transcripts that can survive death. When a person aligns with their Adjuster's guidance, seeing "eye to eye" mentally and enforcing decisions of this combined mind through their will, the Adjuster achieves a form of personality expression. This creates a unified consciousness that approaches the morontia order of existence, representing a significant step toward the eventual union of human and divine.
Adjusters engage in a sacred and superb game throughout the ages—an adventure of guiding mortals through time and space. They experience joy when human cooperation permits assistance with temporal struggles while simultaneously pursuing their eternal tasks. Unfortunately, Adjuster communications often get lost in the material currents of human mind, with only occasional echoes of the divine voice breaking through. The success of an Adjuster depends not on theoretical beliefs but on human decisions, determinations, and steadfast faith that help break down resistance to spiritual guidance.
Humans can consciously improve cooperation with their indwelling Adjusters in several specific ways. This includes choosing to respond to divine leading through truth, beauty, and goodness; loving God and desiring to be like him; loving fellow humans and serving them wholeheartedly; and joyfully accepting cosmic citizenship with its accompanying responsibilities. Confusion or discouragement does not necessarily indicate resistance to Adjuster guidance but may reflect a temporary lack of active cooperation. A devoted and determined effort toward eternal destiny remains fully compatible with a joyous life and successful career on earth.
Adjusters receive continuous streams of cosmic intelligence through universe circuits but cannot transmit much of this wisdom to human minds due to the lack of commonness in nature and absence of responsive recognition. The Adjusters constantly work to spiritualize the human mind and evolve the morontia soul, though humans remain largely unconscious of this inner ministry. Mortals cannot easily distinguish between their own thoughts and the Adjuster's influence, though certain abrupt presentations of thoughts may represent direct or indirect work of the Adjuster. More frequently, these are simply the natural emergence of ideas from submerged mental levels, which should be distinguished from genuine spiritual revelations.
The vast gulf between human and divine natures creates significant communication challenges for the Adjusters. Humans are largely controlled by electrical and chemical forces, highly animal-like in behavior, and emotionally reactive, making it difficult for Adjusters to guide them effectively. When Adjusters do break through with spiritual revelation, it can sometimes overwhelm the human mind, precipitating fanaticism or intellectual upheaval. This distorts the original message due to the mind's inability to properly integrate such advanced concepts. The supervising personalities of the system express concern about the diminishing numbers of higher spiritual types who can function safely with self-acting Adjusters.
The voice of conscience and the guidance of the Thought Adjuster are distinctly different phenomena that should not be confused. Conscience is a purely human and psychic reaction that rightly encourages doing right, while the Adjuster attempts to communicate what truly is right when the human is capable of perceiving such guidance. The disordered and disconnected parade of dream experiences demonstrates the inability of Adjusters to harmonize and associate the divergent factors of the mortal mind within a single lifetime. Only in rare cases can they achieve sufficient coordination to permit transition to the mansion worlds without experiencing death.
During sleep, Adjusters attempt to register only what the waking consciousness has previously approved, working within the superconscious realm where human and divine interact. Dream absurdities testify not only to unexpressed emotions but also to the distortion of spiritual concepts the Adjusters attempt to impart. It is dangerous to assume that every new thought originates from the Adjuster, as most often these are simply emanations of one's own intellect. Each person must discern these influences according to their own wisdom and insight, recognizing that excessive concern with detecting Adjuster communications can actually hinder the Adjuster's work rather than facilitate spiritual progress.
The seven psychic circles represent progressive levels of personality realization that mortals must conquer on their evolutionary journey. Entry into the seventh circle marks the beginning of true human personality function, while completion of the first circle indicates relative maturity. These circles measure not just intellectual growth but the harmonious development of the entire personality—material, intellectual, and spiritual aspects working in balance. Progress through these circles depends on balanced development, as either overly intellectual or excessively spiritual growth can create difficulties in Adjuster communication.
The circles cannot be precisely defined, though minimum and maximum limits can be suggested for these stages of maturity realization. The seventh circle marks the development of personal choice, moral responsibility, and spiritual individuality, coinciding with the functioning of all seven adjutant mind-spirits and the reception of a Thought Adjuster. The third circle represents a crucial milestone, as the Adjuster becomes significantly more effective after the human receives a personal seraphic guardian, with unmistakable improvement in all phases of cosmic achievement. The first circle achievement enables more direct Adjuster communication before the soul transitions to the next phase of existence.
Circle attainment relates to the quantitative growth of the morontia soul and comprehension of supreme meanings, but the qualitative status of the immortal soul depends entirely on grasping that mortals are children of the eternal God. Faith transforms potentials to actuals in the spiritual realm, but in finite realms, potentials become actuals through choice-experience, particularly choosing to do God's will. From the seventh to the third circle, the adjutant mind-spirits work intensively to wean the mortal mind from material dependencies before increasing introduction to morontia levels. Their influence progressively diminishes beyond the third circle as the mind becomes increasingly aligned with morontia intelligence.
The achievement of the seven cosmic circles does not automatically result in Adjuster fusion, which requires complete alignment of the mortal will with God's will as represented by the Adjuster. When this ultimate attunement occurs, along with circle completion, fusion may happen during physical life (resulting in the disappearance of the material body) or after death. Many Adjusters who achieve fusion have gained valuable experience through previous indwellings, though not exclusively with mortals who failed to survive. Experience benefits advanced work regardless of the survival outcome of previous associations.
For most Urantia mortals, the material body and brain create barriers to Adjuster communication that persist until death. The chief difficulty in human-Adjuster contact stems from humanity's material nature and insufficient mental discipline to hear the divine Monitor. Despite these challenges, when fusion does occur, it creates an eternal partnership where the mortal and divine become truly one—neither distinguishable from the other. This new being possesses both the human experiences of the mortal's survival journey and the Adjuster's vast experience throughout all previous indwellings.
