Discover The Urantia Book \Papers\Intermediate \The Lucifer Rebellion
Lucifer’s rebellion arose from pride and false liberty, rejecting divine authority. It caused widespread disruption but was contained by loyal beings. Mercy delays full justice to allow experiential understanding.
Reading Level:
Lucifer was a brilliant primary Lanonandek Son of Nebadon who fell from his high position as a System Sovereign through rebellion against universe authority. Despite his magnificent beginnings and distinguished service record, he embraced sin and error, becoming one of only three System Sovereigns in Nebadon's history to reject universe allegiance and surrender to the false notion of personal liberty. This rebellion, led by Lucifer and his lieutenant Satan, resulted in widespread disruption across the Satania system, affecting 37 inhabited worlds, including Urantia.
The rebellion persisted for approximately 200,000 years until Michael's bestowal on Urantia effectively ended its spread and influence. Though the rebel leaders lost their governing powers and freedom to travel after Michael's incarnation as Jesus, they remain in custody awaiting final judgment from the superuniverse authorities. The consequences of their actions continue to affect Urantia, though the rebellion has been contained, and no additional worlds have fallen since the original 37 planets joined the insurrection.
Lucifer was a brilliant primary Lanonandek Son who had served with distinction in many systems of Nebadon. He was number 37 of his order and had been designated as one of the one hundred most capable and intelligent personalities among more than seven hundred thousand of his kind. From this promising beginning, he descended into evil and error, eventually embracing sin and rebellion against the established order of the universe.
In the universe of Nebadon, Christ Michael's domain of ten thousand systems of inhabited worlds, only three System Sovereigns throughout its entire history have rejected their responsibilities and rebelled against the universe government. Lucifer's fall is particularly notable because he was not an ascendant being with evolutionary limitations but a created Son specifically designed for leadership who chose to surrender to the deception of spurious personal liberty and rejection of fraternal obligations.
Lucifer was a created Son of the local universe who was perfect from the day of his creation until unrighteousness developed within him. He reigned as chief executive of a great system of 607 inhabited worlds and stood next to the Most High Fathers of the constellations in the direct line of universe authority. Despite his transgression, other beings maintained a respectful attitude toward him prior to Michael's bestowal on Urantia, as judgment in such matters belongs to the Ancients of Days.
Satan, a member of the same primary group of Lanonandeks but never a System Sovereign, was assigned by Lucifer to advocate his cause on Urantia. Caligastia, the deposed Planetary Prince of Urantia, was also aligned with them in the rebellion. Together with Abaddon (Caligastia's chief of staff) and Beelzebub (leader of disloyal midway creatures), they formed the leadership of what became symbolically represented as "the dragon" in later accounts, whose forces were eventually bound by Gabriel after Michael's triumph.
Lucifer and Satan had ruled on Jerusem for more than five hundred thousand years when they began to align themselves against the Universal Father and Michael. There were no special conditions in the Satania system that suggested or favored rebellion; investigators believe the idea originated entirely in Lucifer's mind and would have happened regardless of where he was stationed. It took several months for Lucifer to corrupt Satan's mind, but once converted, Satan became an earnest advocate for the rebellion.
The exact cause of the rebellion is difficult to pinpoint, but it appears to have begun with pride that nourished itself to the point of self-deception. Lucifer initially convinced himself his rebellion was for the good of the system or even the universe. By the time his plans developed to the point of disillusionment, his pride prevented him from turning back, and what began as mischief evolved into deliberate and willful sin. Despite numerous opportunities for repentance offered over time, Lucifer and most of his subordinates consistently rejected the mercy of the Creator Son with increasing contempt and disdain.
The official outbreak of the rebellion took form as the Lucifer Declaration of Liberty, which presented the rebels' cause under three main headings. First, Lucifer charged that the Universal Father did not actually exist, claiming that physical gravity and space-energy were inherent in the universe and the Father was merely a myth invented by the Paradise Sons to maintain their rule. This attack particularly influenced the ascendant citizens on Jerusem to stand firm against the rebellion.
Second, Lucifer contested the government of Creator Son Michael, arguing that local systems should be autonomous and protesting Michael's right to claim sovereignty in the name of a "hypothetical Paradise Father." He denounced the Ancients of Days as "foreign potentates" and tyrants, encouraging his followers to assert their independence. Third, he attacked the universal plan for mortal ascension, claiming too much time and energy were expended training mortals for a destiny he claimed was fictional, pointing to the finaliters on Jerusem as evidence of what he considered a foolish enterprise. With this manifesto, Lucifer launched his "orgy of darkness and death."
The Lucifer manifesto was issued during the annual conclave of Satania on the sea of glass, before the assembled hosts of Jerusem, approximately 200,000 years ago by Urantia time. Satan proclaimed that worship could be given to universal forces, but allegiance should only be acknowledged to Lucifer, whom he called the "friend of men and angels" and the "God of liberty." Self-assertion became the central theme of the rebellion, with Lucifer arguing that if self-government was appropriate for the Melchizedeks, it should apply to all orders of intelligence.
Lucifer promised the Planetary Princes they would rule as supreme executives on their worlds, and he established his own legislative assembly and judicial system under Satan's jurisdiction. His entire administrative cabinet publicly pledged allegiance to the new government of the "liberated worlds and systems." Lucifer interpreted the mercy and patience of universe authorities as evidence of weakness, openly defying Michael, Immanuel, and the Ancients of Days. Gabriel announced he would eventually speak for Michael and that all beings would remain free to make their own choice, as the government desired only loyalty that was "voluntary, wholehearted, and sophistry-proof."
When the Satania rebellion erupted, Michael consulted with his Paradise brother Immanuel before announcing he would follow his previous policy of non-interference with such upheavals. At that time, Michael had not completed his bestowal career and had not yet received full sovereign authority over Nebadon. From the beginning of the rebellion until his enthronement as sovereign ruler, Michael allowed the rebel forces to run their course for nearly 200,000 Urantia years.
While Michael remained on Salvington, Gabriel established himself on Jerusem to command the loyal hosts of Satania, displaying Michael's emblem of three blue concentric circles on a white background. The rebellion was not a physical battle as might be conceived on Urantia. In the early days, Lucifer continuously held forth in the planetary amphitheater while Gabriel conducted an unceasing exposure of the rebel sophistries from a nearby headquarters. Those uncertain of their position would travel between these discussions until reaching a decision. Though lacking the physical violence of material warfare, this heavenly conflict was far more consequential because eternal life, not just physical existence, was at stake.
During the rebellion, many beings performed noble acts of devotion and loyalty. Perhaps the most thrilling was the courageous conduct of Manotia, second in command of the Satania headquarters' seraphim. When the head of the seraphic hosts joined Lucifer's cause (explaining why so many administrator seraphim went astray), Manotia refused to participate in what was called "the projected insult to Michael," despite the powerful rebels seeking Manotia's destruction.
When a superior defected, Manotia assumed command of the angelic hosts on Jerusem as the director of confused seraphic affairs. Manotia was morally supported by the Melchizedeks and most of the Material Sons, though deserted by many of the same seraphic order. With the Satania system cut off from constellation circuits due to Lucifer's secession, Manotia and the loyal forces relied on intelligence from the nearby system of Rantulia to communicate with higher authorities. Eventually, they maintained order until the arrival of Lucifer's successor, after which Manotia was assigned to the Melchizedek corps on Urantia, where this seraphim continues to serve today.
The Lucifer rebellion affected the entire Satania system, with thirty-seven Planetary Princes leading their worlds into rebellion. Only on Panoptia did the Planetary Prince fail to sway his people against Michael. Under the guidance of the Melchizedeks and the leadership of a young woman named Ellanora, the people of Panoptia remained entirely loyal, and they now serve as caretakers of the Father's sphere and its surrounding detention worlds while awaiting transport to Edentia.
When the rebellion broke out, all communication in the Satania system was cut off from both constellation and universe circuits, with messages being handled by seraphic agents and Solitary Messengers. The rebellion did not attract higher orders of universe sonship, but it did affect some Life Carriers on rebel planets. A heavy toll was taken among Morontia Companions, Mansion World Teachers, and certain orders of angels, particularly the administrator angels of whom slightly over one-third followed their disloyal chief. Of the 681,217 Material Sons lost in Satania, 95% were casualties of the rebellion. However, not a single ascending mortal citizen of Jerusem participated in the rebellion, a fact later celebrated throughout Nebadon.
Lucifer and Satan freely traveled throughout the Satania system until Michael completed his bestowal mission on Urantia. They came to Urantia together for their combined assault on the Son of Man, but their efforts to corrupt Michael during his incarnation failed completely. Following Michael's bestowal, all sympathy for the rebels vanished throughout Satania, except on the isolated worlds of the rebellious Planetary Princes.
Michael's bestowal effectively terminated the Lucifer rebellion throughout Satania except on the planets of the apostate Planetary Princes. Jesus referred to this victory when he exclaimed to his disciples, "I beheld Satan fall as lightning from heaven." When confronted with Lucifer's proposals, Jesus simply replied, "Get you behind me, Satan," which in principle marked the real end of the rebellion. Though Caligastia remained technically recognized as Urantia's Prince until near Jesus' death, Jesus announced his judgment, saying, "Now is the judgment of this world; now shall the prince of this world be cast down." Before leaving Urantia, Michael offered mercy to Caligastia and his associate Daligastia, but they refused his offer.
Early in the rebellion, Michael offered salvation to all rebels upon his attainment of complete universe sovereignty. Though none of the leaders accepted this mercy, thousands of angels and lower celestial beings, including hundreds of Material Sons and Daughters, embraced the offer and received rehabilitation at the time of Jesus' resurrection. These beings have been transferred to a special world on Jerusem where they await the final court decision, though it is widely believed they will be exempted from the final extinction decree.
Since Michael became the settled head of the universe, Lucifer has been held in custody on a satellite of Jerusem. The rebellion is completely over on Jerusem and is ending on the fallen worlds as divine Sons arrive on these planets. No additional worlds have been lost to the rebellion in the nearly 200,000 years since the original defection. The universe awaits the final broadcast announcing the destruction of the imprisoned rebels, while their prison worlds serve as a solemn warning to all Nebadon, eloquently proclaiming the truth that "the way of the transgressor is hard" and that "within every sin is concealed the seed of its own destruction."
