Discover The Urantia Book \Papers\Intermediate \Energy – Mind and Matter
Energy, mind, and matter interact under spirit dominance. Physical reality emerges from Paradise forces, unified by mind and directed by spiritual will toward divine purpose and personal growth.
Reading Level:
The foundation of the universe is material in that energy forms the basis of all existence, and this energy is controlled by the Universal Father. This vast stream of energy from Paradise has never failed or ceased, serving as eternal proof of the presence of the Universal Absolute. The Father's personal control of power and energy is modified by the actions of the Eternal Son and the Conjoint Actor, yet all force-energy ultimately remains under the control of a personal God residing at the center of all things.
The Paper explores the intricate relationship between energy, matter, and mind, presenting a comprehensive classification of energy forms and material states throughout the universe. From the most basic ultimatonic particles to complex mind systems, the text reveals how all energy originates from Paradise and eventually returns there in endless cycles of transformation. The narrative further explains how mind dominates matter, which in turn responds to spirit, creating an integrated cosmic system that reflects the divine intelligence behind all creation.
The foundation of the universe is material in the sense that energy is the basis of all existence, and pure energy is controlled by the Universal Father. This vast stream of energy proceeding from Paradise has never lapsed or failed, serving as an everlasting monument demonstrating the existence and presence of the Universal Absolute. The manipulation of universe energy always follows the personal will and wise mandates of the Universal Father, though this personal control is modified by the co-ordinate acts of the Eternal Son and the united purposes executed by the Conjoint Actor.
These divine beings act personally and as individuals, but also function through an almost unlimited number of subordinates, each expressing the eternal divine purpose in the universe. Despite the functional modifications of divine power, all force-energy remains under the ultimate control of a personal God resident at the center of all things, a truth that is undiminished by any transmutations of divine power in the cosmos.
The foundation of the universe is material, but the essence of life is spirit, with the Father of spirits also being the ancestor of universes. Matter and energy, diverse manifestations of the same cosmic reality, are inherent in the Universal Father, with all things consisting in him. The ultimaton, the first measurable form of energy, has Paradise as its nucleus, and there exists in matter and universal space a form of energy not yet discovered on earth that, when finally found, will help physicists feel they have nearly solved the mystery of matter.
Energy proceeds from Paradise, fashioned after the divine order, partaking of the nature of divine organization. All force is circuited in Paradise, coming from and returning to the Paradise Presences, manifesting the uncaused Cause—the Universal Father. While energy is eternal and imperishable, it is not infinitely manifest, as there are outer limits to the presently conceived master universe. Energy ever responds to the all-embracing grasp of Infinity, and that which originates from Paradise Deity must have either a Paradise destination or a Deity destiny, confirming belief in a circular, somewhat limited, but orderly and far-flung universe of universes.
Finding suitable words in English to designate the various levels of force and energy—physical, mindal, or spiritual—is difficult. In this paper, "energy" is used to denote all phases of phenomenal motion and potential, "force" applies to pregravity stages, and "power" to postgravity stages of energy. The Paper suggests adopting a classification for cosmic force, emergent energy, and universe power, starting with space potency (the free space presence of the Unqualified Absolute) and continuing through primordial force, emergent energies, universe power, Havona energy, transcendental energy, and monota.
The description of these energy systems traces their evolution from passive potential to active power, explaining how space potency transforms into primordial force through the tension-presence of living Paradise force organizers. This force then becomes emergent energy in two phases: puissant energy (powerful-directional) and gravity energy (responsive to Paradise gravity). These energies further evolve into universe power, which serves the manifold purposes of universe Creators. The progression continues through higher forms including Havona energy, transcendental energy, and finally monota—the living, nonspirit energy of Paradise that is the eternity counterpart of the living, spirit energy of the Original Son.
Matter in all universes, except the central universe, is identical in its physical properties. These properties depend on factors such as the revolutionary rates of matter's component members, their number and size, distance from the nuclear body, and the presence of certain forces not yet discovered on earth. There are ten grand divisions of matter throughout the various suns, planets, and space bodies of the universe.
The ten divisions range from ultimatonic matter (the prime physical units) through subelectronic matter, electronic matter, subatomic matter, shattered atoms, ionized matter, atomic matter, molecular matter, and radioactive matter, to collapsed matter found in cold or dead suns. This classification pertains to matter's organization rather than how it appears to created beings, and does not account for pre-emergent energy stages or eternal materializations on Paradise and in the central universe.
Light, heat, electricity, magnetism, chemism, energy, and matter are—in origin, nature, and destiny—one and the same thing, though they undergo almost endless changes throughout the universes. Energy may appear as light in one universe, as light plus heat in another, and as unknown forms elsewhere, potentially reappearing after untold millions of years as different forms of energy or matter. Regardless of these transformations, matter and energy always remain true to the circle of eternity, responsive to their source even when prevented from immediately returning to it.
The power centers and physical controllers are heavily involved in transmuting ultimatons into electron circuits. These beings control and compound power by manipulating the basic units of materialized energy, but their influence diminishes once energy organizes into atomic systems. Temperature—heat and cold—is second only to gravity in energy and matter evolution, with low temperatures favoring certain forms of electronic construction and atomic assembly, while high temperatures facilitate atomic breakup and material disintegration. Throughout these transformations, gravity pressure, ultimatonic energies, temperature, velocity, and revolution all influence how energy and matter change forms.
In the superuniverse of Orvonton, there exist one hundred octaves of wave energy, of which sixty-four are wholly or partially recognized on earth. The sun's rays constitute four octaves in this scale, with visible light comprising just a single octave (number forty-six). Beyond visible light are ultraviolet rays, X-rays, and gamma rays, while thirty-two octaves above visible sunlight are the outer-space energy rays often mixed with highly energized minute particles of matter. Below visible light are the infrared rays, and thirty octaves below these are the radio transmission group.
Wavelike energy manifestations can be classified into ten groups from the perspective of twentieth-century earth science. These range from infraultimatonic rays (the borderland revolutions of ultimatons) through ultimatonic rays, short space rays, electronic stage energies, gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet rays, white light, infrared rays, to Hertzian waves used for broadcasting. Of these ten phases, the human eye can detect only one octave—the whole light of ordinary sunlight. What appears as wave phenomena occurs because of resistance to the procession of energy particles and the influence of gravity and other intervening forces.
When universal force organizes into matter, it concentrates into discrete masses with definite dimensions and established weight, fully activating linear gravity. Preatomic matter becomes slightly gravity-responsive when activated by X-rays and similar energies, but free ultimatons and unattached electronic particles do not experience measurable linear-gravity pull. Ultimatons function through mutual attraction and respond only to the circular Paradise-gravity pull, although they can accelerate to the point of partial antigravity behavior but cannot independently reach the critical escape velocity to return to the puissant-energy stage.
The ultimaton, unknown on earth, slows down through many phases of physical activity before reaching the revolutionary-energy prerequisites needed for electronic organization. Precisely one hundred ultimatons bind together to form each electron, and this number never varies in typical electrons. Ultimatons don't orbit within electrons but spread or cluster according to their axial revolutionary velocities, determining the electron's dimensions and positive or negative qualities. To provide perspective on scale, if an electron's mass were magnified to one-tenth of an ounce, its volume would become as large as earth, while a proton—eighteen hundred times heavier than an electron—magnified to a pinhead would comparatively have a diameter equal to earth's orbit around the sun.
All matter forms according to the solar system pattern, with a relatively stable, stationary nuclear portion of material existence at the center. This central unit has a threefold possibility of manifestation, while around it whirl energy units in fluctuating circuits, resembling planets orbiting the sun. Within atoms, electrons revolve around the central proton with approximately the same comparative room that planets have in the solar system. The electronic axial revolutions and orbital velocities are beyond human imagination, with positive particles of radium flying into space at ten thousand miles per second and negative particles approaching light speed.
Local universes feature exactly one hundred distinguishable atomic materializations of space-energy, representing the maximum possible organization of matter in Nebadon. Each atom can contain from one to one hundred orbital electrons, though only the outer ten electrons of larger atoms revolve as distinct bodies in precise orbits. The thirty electrons closest to the nucleus are difficult to detect as separate entities, and the inner electrons become progressively less individualized the nearer they are to the nucleus. The last ten electrons, present only in the ten heaviest elements, possess greater independence and can more easily escape from the central nucleus, as demonstrated by uranium's spontaneous disruption.
While gravity plays a role in holding together atomic energy systems, there exists a powerful unknown energy present in and among the basic physical units. This universal influence permeates all space within the atom and behaves in ways not fully predictable by the laws of positive and negative attraction. The charged protons and uncharged neutrons of the nucleus are held together by the reciprocating function of the mesotron, a particle 180 times heavier than an electron, without which the electrical charge of protons would disrupt the nucleus.
The mesotron maintains nuclear integrity by causing protons and neutrons to constantly exchange places, with particles switching between charged and uncharged states so rapidly that the electric charge has no opportunity to function disruptively. This particle functions as an "energy-carrier" that significantly contributes to atomic stability. When atoms undergo radioactive decay, they emit more energy than expected because of the mesotron breaking up. However, the mesotron doesn't explain the cohesion between proton-to-proton or neutron-to-neutron, suggesting another form of energy responsible for atomic cohesive integrity that remains undiscovered on earth.
Religion is not alone in its tendency toward dogmatism; natural philosophy (science) equally tends to make dogmatic assertions without sufficient evidence. The universe displays a sevenfold persistence in its creative constitution, exhibited in the chemical domain as a recurrence of similar properties in groups of seven when elements are arranged by atomic weight. This sevenfold pattern diminishes as one moves through the chemical table but is most noticeable in the lighter atomic groupings, pointing to the sevenfold constitution of ancestral energy and the sevenfold diversity of the creations of time and space.
Not all propositions of natural philosophy are valid, however. The hypothetical ether, for instance, represents an ingenious but incorrect attempt to explain space phenomena through human reasoning. Physical stability combined with biological elasticity exists in nature only because of the transcendental wisdom possessed by the Master Architects of creation. Nothing less than such wisdom could design units of matter that are simultaneously stable and efficiently flexible for the needs of the universe.
The endless sweep of cosmic reality, from Paradise monota to space potency, suggests certain evolutions of relationship in the nonspiritual realities of the First Source and Center. This eternal cycle of energy is absolute and expansile in time-space meanings as energy-matter becomes increasingly subject to the control of living and divine spirit through the experiential striving of living and personal mind. The universal nonspiritual energies are reassociated in non-Creator mind systems at various levels of complexity and function.
These mind systems include preadjutant-spirit minds (nonexperiencing, mechanical intellect ministered by Master Physical Controllers), adjutant-spirit minds (teachable intellect ranging from subhuman to superhuman, ministered by the local universe Mother Spirit), evolving morontia minds (expanding consciousness in local universe ascending careers), and cosmic mind (sevenfold diversified mind coordinating with evolutionary-deity levels of the Supreme Mind). On Paradise, mind is absolute; in Havona, it is absonite; and in Orvonton, it is finite, but all mind levels are overshadowed by the universal presence of the Conjoint Actor—the mind-gravity grasp of the God of mind on Paradise.
In evaluating mind, it's important to remember that the universe is neither purely mechanical nor magical, but rather a creation of mind operating through mechanisms of law. While the laws of nature appear to function in dual physical and spiritual realms, they are fundamentally unified. The First Source and Center appears in the universes beyond Havona only as pure energy and pure spirit, such as Thought Adjusters and similar fragmentations of divine essence. Mechanisms do not absolutely dominate creation; the universe of universes is mind planned, mind made, and mind administered.
The divine mechanism of the universe is too perfect for finite human minds to discern the dominance of infinite mind. Motion and universe gravitation constitute twin facets of the impersonal time-space mechanism, with gravity response levels for spirit, mind, and matter being independent of time, though only true spirit levels are independent of space. Linear-gravity response measures nonspirit energy, affecting all mass except as modified by motion and mind. The more complex a universe mechanism appears, the more it tends to conceal the presence of the originative indwelling mind from lower-order intelligences, though the evolutionary capacity of the universe is inexhaustible in its spontaneity and purposive direction.
The evolution of mechanisms implies and demonstrates the concealed presence and dominance of creative mind. The human intellect's ability to conceive, design, and create automatic mechanisms reveals the superior, creative qualities of human mind as the dominant influence on earth. Mind always reaches out toward creation of material mechanisms, discovery of hidden mysteries, exploration of remote situations, formulation of mental systems, attainment of wisdom goals, achievement of spirit levels, and the accomplishment of divine destinies—supreme, ultimate, and absolute.
Mind is always creative, producing suitable and serviceable bodies for living creatures. The personality form represents the pattern aspect of a living being—the arrangement of energies plus life and motion. Even spirit beings have forms that are real, with nearly all beings in the seven superuniverses possessing forms that are individually characteristic and personally distinguishable. While physical energy may predominate in nonpersonal situations, the more nearly spirit-mind function approaches divinity of purpose and supremacy of action, the more dominant spirit becomes. The spirit is the creative reality, while the physical is the time-space reflection of that spiritual reality—mind universally dominates matter, even as it responds to the ultimate overcontrol of spirit.
