Discover The Urantia Book \Papers\Intermediate \The Foundations of Religious Faith
Religious faith is founded on spiritual insight, not material evidence. True faith aligns personality with God, empowering individuals to interpret life with trust, hope, and confidence in divine purpose and reality.
Reading Level:
Paper 102 explores the foundations of religious faith as a transformative human experience that contrasts with materialistic worldviews. It examines how faith transcends the limitations of material existence and connects individuals with divine reality through personal spiritual experience. The paper describes the nature of religious certainty, which differs fundamentally from scientific certainty but is equally valid in its domain of spiritual reality.
Religious faith is presented as a living relationship with God that provides assurance about spiritual realities beyond what science or philosophy can offer. The paper analyzes how religious experience creates certainty about God's existence, explains the difference between belief and faith, and demonstrates how religious faith functions as a liberator from the constraints of material existence. Throughout the paper, the relationship between knowledge, wisdom, and spiritual insight is explored to show how these work together to form a complete understanding of reality.
To the materialist, human life appears as an evolutionary accident without purpose, where all human achievements, loves, and aspirations will eventually be extinguished by death and eternal oblivion. From this perspective, the universe seems hostile and indifferent to human existence, with despair being humanity's only reward for living and striving under the temporal sun of mortal existence.
However, this bleak vision is not humanity's true destiny, as it can be dispelled by one courageous act of faith from even the humblest of God's children. This saving faith is born when the moral consciousness recognizes that human values can be transformed from material to spiritual, from human to divine, and from temporal to eternal, establishing a connection with enduring spiritual reality.
The Thought Adjuster explains humanity's transition from an evolutionary sense of duty to faith in eternal realities. Those who choose to do God's will discover the path of truth, with childlike trust securing entrance to the kingdom while spiritual progress depends on the robust faith of maturity. Human things must be known to be loved, but divine things must be loved to be known, highlighting the different approaches to material and spiritual knowledge.
Science bases its reasoning on observable facts of time, while religious faith draws from the eternal spirit program. Truth remains constant across generations, though teachings about the physical world continuously change. The certainties of science come entirely from the intellect, while the certitudes of religion spring from the foundations of the entire personality. More scientific knowledge brings less certainty, while deeper religious experience brings greater certainty, demonstrating their different natures.
Religion needs no formal definition because it is recognized through its social, intellectual, moral, and spiritual fruits in human lives. As a property of the human race rather than a product of culture, genuine religious experience creates a distinctive type of personality that stands apart from others, though perception of religion remains subject to human limitations.
Religious practitioners live and act as if already in the presence of the Eternal, displaying an originality and spontaneity that distinguishes them from others. They appear emancipated from the stress and anxiety inherent in temporal existence, exhibiting remarkable stability and tranquility. While knowledge remains an eternal quest never reaching completion, the religiously illuminated soul knows God in the present moment with profound certainty, yet this spiritual assurance does not diminish interest in the progress of human wisdom.
Limited education or intellectual poverty creates significant obstacles to higher religious attainment by restricting the mind's philosophical contact with scientific knowledge. Religion must navigate the paradox of making effective use of thought while recognizing that thinking is not the most valuable aspect of spiritual experience. Religious speculation inevitably distorts its object by translating religion into material or humanistic terms.
Science sorts and categorizes people, while religion loves them regardless of status. Wisdom provides justice to different individuals, while revelation glorifies humanity by revealing our capacity for partnership with God. Science vainly attempts to create cultural brotherhood, religion brings spiritual brotherhood, and revelation portrays the eternal brotherhood. Science identifies, religion values, philosophy unifies, and revelation confirms the circle of reality as universal, eternal, absolute, and infinite—the cosmos of the Infinite I AM.
Because of the Thought Adjuster's presence in human minds, knowing God's mind is no more mysterious than knowing any other mind. Human experience involves interaction between an active, questioning self and external reality, with the depth of experience determined by concept depth and recognition of external reality. Faith transforms this awareness of other minds into recognition of God as the source, nature, and destiny of all other-mindness.
The error content in religious experience correlates directly with the degree of materialism contaminating one's spiritual concept of the Universal Father. Prayer has been overemphasized in modern religions at the expense of worship, which illuminates destiny while prayer merely enriches life. Revealed religion serves as the unifying element of human existence, coordinating geology, astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology, sociology, and psychology, with spiritual experience forming the true soul of humanity's cosmic understanding.
While establishing belief is not equivalent to proving what is believed, the evolution of simple life to personality status demonstrates the existence of personality potential from the beginning. In the evolving cosmos, potential is supreme over the actual, as what will be represents the unfolding of Deity's purposive mandates across time and space.
This purposive supremacy appears in human evolution when primitive animal fear transforms into deepening reverence for God and cosmic awe. Though psychology may analyze evolutionary religion, it cannot penetrate the real motives of personal religious experience. Religion transcends morality as love transcends duty and sonship transcends servitude. Morality reveals an almighty Controller to be served, while religion reveals an all-loving Father to be worshipped and loved, demonstrating how spiritual potential dominates the duty-bound actuality of evolutionary morality.
Philosophical advancement and scientific progress help eliminate religious fear and superstition, though they may temporarily obscure spiritual vision. The relationship between creature and Creator is a living experience—a dynamic religious faith that cannot be precisely defined or isolated from life as a whole. God claims either all allegiance or none, as isolating part of life as "religion" disintegrates life and distorts religious experience.
Faith transforms the philosophical God of probability into the certain God of personal religious experience. When contacting cosmic reality, certainty can be experienced when meanings and values are approached through living faith. Though reason may question faith, faith supplements both reason and logic, creating a moral certainty beyond intellectual arguments. The evidence of this spiritual certainty appears in the social fruits produced by believers—love and service to others—demonstrating that religion is a certainty and actuality of genuine spiritual experience.
The Universal Father lives within every rational mortal, yet one cannot be certain about God without personally knowing him through the experience of sonship. The universe depends on the Ultimate and Absolute, with every change regulated by the unchanging laws of God. The fact of God and divine law remains constant, while God's truth—his relationship to the universe—adapts to the evolving cosmos.
Those attempting to create religion without God resemble people gathering fruit without trees or having children without parents. Effects cannot exist without causes; only the I AM is causeless. Humans cannot pray to chemical formulas, worship hypotheses, commune with processes, or love abstractions. While humanistic qualities may grow from non-religious roots, such experiences lack spiritual survival value. Religious certainty withstands difficulties and obstacles, triumphing over them through living faith despite intellectual challenges and skepticism.
The highest evidence for religion's reality lies in human experience—that people who are naturally fearful and self-preserving willingly trust their deepest interests to God. Religions differ on what God requires in return for salvation, but all acknowledge this fundamental trust relationship. A religion's evolutionary status is best judged by its moral judgments and ethical standards, with higher religions encouraging and being encouraged by improving social morality.
Ethics reflects the external social progress of internal spiritual and religious development, while religious faith provides inner spiritual assurance despite challenging circumstances. Religion is rooted in personal experience, not miracles or authority. The highest revealed religion in our universe—the earth life of Jesus—demonstrates the unique experience of a mortal seeking and finding God while simultaneously God sought and found man to the complete satisfaction of both the human soul and divine perfection.
