The Default of Adam and Eve
  • Summary

  • Introduction

Adam found very little improvement in the world outside of Eden after a century of effort. The task of improving the human races seemed very far away. Adam often felt desperate about the situation and shared these feelings with Eve.

  • 1. The Urantia Problem

The mission of Adam and Eve on rebellion-damaged Urantia was very difficult. They quickly realized that their job of improving the planet would be challenging. They could not find a solution to the problem of removing defective genes from the human races.

Adam and Eve found themselves on a planet not ready for their plans to unite the races. Instead of finding one language they could use, they found hundreds of different dialects. They were completely alone with no way to talk to their superiors except through angels.

  • 2. Caligastia's Plot

Caligastia often visited the Garden to talk with Adam and Eve, but they refused all his suggestions to take shortcuts. Neither they nor their children were influenced by his bad ideas. Caligastia could not force anyone to do wrong against their will.

Caligastia was still the official Planetary Prince of Urantia even though he had rebelled. When he failed with Adam, he decided to try to trick Eve instead. He made a plan using the Nodites, who were descendants of his former staff members.

  • 3. The Temptation of Eve

Serapatatia became the leader of the western Nodite tribes after his father died. He was a brilliant man with mixed ancestry. He visited Eden many times and was impressed by Adam and Eve's work to improve the world.

Serapatatia announced that most of his people would join Adam's work. This news made Adam very happy because these Nodites were the strongest and smartest tribe in the area. Serapatatia became a trusted helper, but he was secretly being used by Caligastia without knowing it.

  • 4. The Realization of Default

When Adam learned what Eve had done, he recognized that something was wrong. A heavenly voice then told Adam and Eve they had broken their Garden agreement by disobeying the Melchizedeks' instructions. They had failed their mission.

Eve had agreed to mix good and evil practices. The archangels had warned them many times not to listen to Caligastia's suggestions to combine good and evil. Even though Eve and her partners had good intentions, their actions were wrong because they chose the wrong way instead of following God's plan.

  • 5. Repercussions of Default

Eve was devastated when she realized what she had done. Adam felt only sadness and sympathy for his mate's mistake. Adam then chose to share Eve's fate by also breaking the rules with Laotta, knowing exactly what he was doing.

The Garden dwellers became angry when they learned what happened to Eve. They attacked the nearby Nodite settlement and killed everyone there. Serapatatia was so upset by what happened that he drowned himself the next day.

  • 6. Adam and Eve Leave the Garden

When Adam heard that the Nodites were coming to attack, he asked the Melchizedeks for advice. They refused to tell him what to do but promised to help with whatever he decided. Adam knew he and Eve had failed their mission.

Adam gathered about 1,200 loyal followers and left Eden at noon the next day. He chose to leave the Garden to the Nodites without a fight because he did not want war. The Edenic caravan was stopped after three days by the arrival of seraphic transports from Jerusem.

  • 7. Degradation of Adam and Eve

While the Edenic caravan was stopped, Gabriel appeared to Adam and Eve. He told them they had failed their duty as trustees of Urantia. Their judges had cleared them of rebellion charges, but they were reduced to mortal status.

Adam and Eve had maintained immortality through mental connection with the Spirit. When they broke this connection through their bad choices, they lost their immortal status. They also lost access to the tree of life, which had given them extra energy to maintain their special bodies.

  • 8. The So-Called Fall of Man

Adam and Eve did fall from their high position as Material Sons to become regular mortals. But this was not the "fall of man" that some legends describe. Even with the Adamic mission's problems, humans still benefited greatly from Adam and Eve's contribution.

The human race has not fallen but has been steadily evolving. Adam's genetic contribution improved the world's populations. Even though Adam and Eve failed to follow the divine plan and were reduced to mortal status, they still helped speed up human civilization and biological progress on Urantia.
