Paper 111 Overview: The Adjuster and the Soul

The Thought Adjuster in the human mind makes it impossible for science or philosophy to fully understand the evolving soul of human personality. The morontia soul is a child of the universe that can only be known through cosmic insight and spiritual discovery. The concept of a soul and indwelling spirit has appeared in many belief systems throughout history.

The Adjuster works spiritually on the foundation of the human mind. The mind is where human personalities make decisions, choose God or reject him, and decide their eternal future. Through the relationship between the material mind and divine spirit, something new is created - the morontia soul, which can survive death.

The presence of the divine Adjuster in the human mind makes it forever impossible for science or philosophy to completely understand the evolving soul of human personality. The morontia soul is a child of the universe and can only be known through cosmic insight and spiritual discovery.

The concept of a soul and an indwelling spirit is not new to earth. Many religions have recognized that humans have both divine and human qualities. Throughout history, people have believed there is something growing within human nature that will survive beyond mortal life.

The Adjusters must do their spiritual work on an intellectual foundation. The human mind is the soil from which the spirit Monitor must grow the morontia soul, working together with the human personality. There is unity among the various mind levels throughout the universe of universes.

Material mind is the arena where human personalities make decisions, choose God or reject him, and decide their eternal destiny. Mind is almost all you have that is subject to your will, and the soul will show the results of your decisions. What matters is not what your mind is like now, but what it is becoming through your choices.

Throughout all mind functions, the whole mind is more powerful than its parts. Mind always seeks unity with spirit on all levels where beings have free will and can progress upward. The material mind of humans carries the morontia fabrics on which the Thought Adjuster creates patterns of eternal values.

Human personality connects with mind and spirit through life in a material body. This creates something completely new - the soul. The soul comes from three sources: the human mind, the divine spirit, and the relationship between them. The soul is neither material nor spiritual but something in between - it is morontial.

Mistakes of the mind and errors in human behavior can delay the development of the soul, but cannot stop it once it has begun with the agreement of both the Adjuster and the human will. However, at any time before death, a person can choose to reject survival. Even after survival, the ascending mortal can choose to reject eternal life until fusion with the Adjuster.

During life in the flesh, the evolving soul can strengthen the spiritual decisions of the mortal mind. The soul cannot work alone on the material level without help from the Adjuster or other spirit beings. As mortal growth continues, the self with its power of choice becomes more identified with the soul. After death and resurrection on the mansion worlds, the personality is completely identified with the morontia self.

Recognition happens when sensory impressions from the outside world fit into memory patterns. Understanding occurs when these recognized impressions and memory patterns become organized into a dynamic network of principles. Meanings only exist in the inner or spiritual worlds of human experience.

True civilization comes from the inner world of mankind. Only the inner life is truly creative. Civilization is in danger when most young people focus on material pursuits rather than ethics, sociology, philosophy, the arts, religion and cosmology. A person has more control over their inner creativity than over the external world, and each person must choose whether this creativity will be random or constructive.

Doing God's will means being willing to share your inner life with God. God has made a fragment of himself subject to human will. Sharing is Godlike - divine. God shares everything with the Eternal Son and Infinite Spirit, and they share with the divine Sons and Daughters of the universes.

Choosing to follow God's will is not surrendering your will. Instead, it expands and perfects your will, raising it to a higher level where the human soul can connect with the spirit Father. When a person makes this choice, they will eventually find union with their Adjuster and will find supreme satisfaction in worshipping God.

Many human troubles come from having two relationships with the universe. Humans are part of nature but can also rise above it. Humans are finite but have a spark of infinity within them. This creates situations with uncertainty and anxiety. The courage needed to rise above nature and oneself might lead to pride.

The problem of sin doesn't naturally exist in the finite world. The finite world was made by an infinite Creator and is good. Evil and sin come from misusing and distorting the finite. The spirit can control mind, and mind can control energy by understanding the laws of the physical universe. But humans often feel insecure because they are bound to nature while having spiritual powers beyond all temporary things.

The essence of the Paradise adventure is uncertainty combined with security - uncertainty in time and mind, but security in spirit and eternity. The indwelling Adjuster cannot stop or reduce the struggles of your life on earth. However, you could allow the Adjuster to fight with you and for you.

Why don't you help the Adjuster show you the spiritual counterpart of your material struggles? Why not let the Adjuster strengthen you with spiritual truths while you deal with temporary problems? Why not encourage the heavenly helper to cheer you with the eternal outlook of universal life? The Adjuster's task is made harder by the complex nature of humans, with their mixture of high ideals and primitive instincts.
